Etymology

Coincide (v.): 1705, “be identical in substance or nature,” but from 1640s as a verb in English in Latin form, “occupy the same space, agree in position,” from Medieval Latin coincidere (used in astrology), literally “to fall upon together,” from Latin com-together” + incidereto fall upon” (in- “upon” + cadere “to fall;” related to: case).  From 1809 as “occur at the same time.”

Wisdom

“For existential mathematics, which does not exist, would probably propose this equation: the value of coincidence equals the degree of its improbability.”

“We know that attention acts as a lightning rod. Merely by concentrating on something one causes endless analogies to collect around it, even penetrate the boundaries of the subject itself: an experience that we call coincidence, serendipity – the terminology is extensive. My experience has been that in these circular travels what is really significant surrounds a central absence, an absence that, paradoxically, is the text being written or to be written.”

Meditation

“We do not create our destiny; we participate in its unfolding. Synchronicity works as a catalyst toward the working out of that destiny.”

— David Richo

Coincidence, serendipity, and synchronicity have always played major roles in my life, especially when I need them the most.

After having my second child and finishing a consultant position, I was in need of a new professional assignment.  After three months, the answer came through an unexpected telephone call from my previous organization asking me if I was interested in interviewing for a permanent position in an area I knew little about, prospect research in the fundraising and nonprofit industry.

Years later, when I was contemplating starting a new life and moving from New York City to Florida, I wasn’t sure what I could do to create another job opportunity.  I then received a call from a man named Bobby Jones while I was watching a movie on the famous golfer by the same name.

This Bobby Jones, recommended by a mutual friend, called to offer his help.  It was a huge aha moment, a cosmic message letting me know that I was on the right track and my proposed move was sanctioned and divinely guided.

Coincidences  are no longer surprises, because they are now a normal integral part of my life.  The answers always come when I ask The Universe for help and when I am patient and relaxed enough to perceive them.  My needs are always answered.

Stay alert and be on the lookout, my friends.  These coincidences are right in reach.

Much Love, Tonya
